Residence Life Policies & Forms

Students living in University housing and leased properties must abide by the following rules and regulations in addition to University policies and procedures including, but not limited to, the Community Standards and the Student Alcohol and Drug Policy.

Residential living at Suffolk University is viewed as an integral part of the education and development of students. Residence hall communities are nurturing environments that emphasize personal and intellectual growth and development. Students have the unique opportunity to interact with others from different backgrounds, participate in service and social events, and define their role within a community.

Each student living in University housing is responsible for being a proactive member adding to the overall university experience of others. Students are responsible for taking ownership in developing a safe and healthy living environment for all the University’s members. In order to provide a safe and secure environment that is conducive to academic pursuits, a number of community living policies need to be observed in University housing.

Each member of the community is encouraged to hold others accountable to the community living policies. As a member of this community, it is essential that you respect the rights of others in the community, as well as University and private property. These policies have been developed to support an environment of mutual respect. Students are expected to live within the standards of the community and encourage others to do the same.

The Residence Life Policies that appear in the Suffolk University Student Handbook apply to all resident students of Suffolk University, including students who live in University housing. Any Suffolk University student (resident and nonresident) who is alleged to have violated the Community Standards in the residence halls is subject to the Student Conduct System.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Housing Portal?

The Housing Portal is the hub for all things Residence Life & Housing! This includes applying for and selecting housing, viewing your housing assignment and roommates, requesting a room change, setting your move-in time, scheduling your move-out time, submitting a request to stay over break periods, etc.

What should I bring with me to live on campus?

View our Residence Life Packing List [PDF] for a quick guide of what you might want to bring with you at move-in!

What size are the beds?

Residence hall beds are Twin XL size. More information on sizes of University Furniture can be found on our Instagram page (@suffolkreslife).

What size mini fridge is permitted in the residence halls?

Mini fridges under 4 cubic feet are permitted in the residence halls. And yes, all roommates may have one. Students may utilize the MicroFridge® vendor for microfridge rentals.

What is a lofted bed? Can I loft my bed?

Bed lofting adds additional space underneath your bed. A ladder is typically needed to reach the bed when it is lofted. Beds are not lofted before move-in. Students will be able to submit a work order to request their bed to lofted after moving in. Lofting kits are limited in availability.

Where can I do laundry? How much is it?

Laundry within the residence halls is free! See the following for laundry room locations:

  • Miller Hall: Basement
  • One Court: 15th Floor
  • 10 West & Modern Theater: Basement
  • Smith Hall: Basement

Something is wrong with my room, how do I get it fixed?

A link will be shared with students at move-in to submit a work order request in SU Connect. Once your request is in, our building hall staff will review it before sending it to facilities. Facilities will come by to check on the reported damage and see what they can do to resolve it. You can also let your RA know of any problem and they can submit a request on your behalf.

In the case of any emergency, please notify the security desk or SUPD.

How do I change my room?

After housing selection all room assignments are considered final. As long as space is available, a room change request form will open in October within the Housing Portal.

Can I live in housing for Fall and not Spring?

Students sign a license agreement in housing for the full academic year. This means students are expected to live in housing for both Fall and Spring semesters. If a student has a change in medical status, financial status, or has other extenuating circumstances that impacts their ability to remain in housing, they can complete a Food & Housing Petition within the Housing Portal.

The Food & Housing Petition and additional submitted supporting documentation will be reviewed by our office and supporting campus partners before a decision is made.

Students who apply for Spring housing only (a separate application process that opens in December) are not required to live in housing for Fall.

What is my mailing address?

Your mailing address is the address of your residence hall. This is listed under your name on the home page of the Housing Portal! Please make sure the student’s name is included on all deliveries.

When can I start sending packages to campus?

Students can start sending packages to campus to be delivered within a few of days of their arrival. Our offices receive hundreds of packages before move-in, so please be patient as our staff work to sort through it. You will receive notice of when your package is delivered and you can pick it up to your Suffolk email address.

Can I bring my own furniture?

Outside furniture is not permitted in the residence halls at this time. This includes headboards, chairs, mattresses, and large storage shelves. We encourage all students to review the packing list for a general synopsis of what should and shouldn’t be brought with you into your room. Information on what is and is not permitted in the residence hall can be found within the Student Handbook underneath Residence Life Policies.

How often do I need to apply for Housing?

Students apply for Housing in their Housing Portal on an annual basis. While new students complete their Housing Application in the summer, returning students (rising sophomores, rising juniors etc.) will need to start working on their Housing Application as early as January and no later than February!

Make sure to actively check your Suffolk email address to ensure you have not missed any important communications or deadlines.

Can I view my room before move-in?

There are video tours of specific room types on our Instagram page (@suffolkreslife) and Visual Room Guides (VRGs) of room types within the Housing Application in the Housing Portal. The VRGs can be accessed by opening your Housing Application and clicking on the link under “Housing Options.”

How do I bring a guest into a residence hall?

If your guest is over 18 years old, they can be checked in with you at the security desk in your building! They just need to bring their License or ID to be left at the security desk for the duration of their stay.

Any guest under 18 years old will need to be registered on your Housing Portal by using the “Underage Visitors” form on the home page. This needs to be fully completed 3 business days before that guest arrives.

Make sure to review the Guest Policy within your Student Handbook for further information.
