Tell us a little about yourself:
I currently am an administrative Intern at Boston Public Schools: McKay K-8 School in East Boston. I’m originally from Seattle WA, and currently live in Albany NY.
I am pursuing a double major at Suffolk because I want to take advantage of my remaining credits and stand out to future master’s programs. My dual degree shows that I am ambitious and well-versed in multiple areas of study that can complement each other.
Which experiences have been the most significant for you so far?
My internship with Boston Public Schools has allowed me to better understand the nuanced roles of school administration and develop skills in areas of professional writing, communication, leadership, and teaching strategies. My responsibilities include writing website pages for the school, leading student government, organizing student clubs, crafting school-wide family communications, and assisting educators in middle school level ELA classes.
Suffolk provided me with the opportunity to apply for a Literacy Camp Fellowship for college students with the Memphis Teacher Residency in Tennessee. I was notified of this program through Handshake and after a rigorous application process, I was accepted to serve the organization this upcoming summer. I hope to work in the education sector in some capacity. This may include a career in teaching or school operations. After graduating next semester, I plan to apply to graduate programs.
Why did you choose Suffolk?
I chose Suffolk because the professors in this department are not only adeptly educated in their fields but have relevant hands-on experience in their respective industries. I find this to be true across all programs and departments of Suffolk. In addition to their excellent pedagogy, Suffolk faculty contribute to our society as distinguished authors, scientists, lawyers, and businesspeople.
Are there any faculty or staff members who have significantly impacted your time here?
Professor Amy Monticello’s Creative Writing course allowed me to rediscover my love for writing. Her thorough content and vulnerable/authentic class environment provided a space for me to feel comfortable experimenting and finding my writer's voice.
Professor Leslie Eckel has supported me academically and professionally since I took my first class with her last semester. She has shown care in the development of my writing and taken interest in the details of my internship. Overall, her caring disposition has encouraged me to grow both as a student and as an individual.
Are you involved in any organizations outside of Suffolk?
I am a volunteer with Big Brother Big Sister (through Suffolk Center for Community Engagement) and spend time with my mentee/my little each week to develop social and emotional learning skills through play, discussion, and time spent together.
How has Suffolk helped prepare you for your next steps?
Suffolk has equipped me with the necessary soft skills and professional literacy to navigate the workforce after I graduate. Many of my classes had professional development opportunities and required students to be active visitors to the Career Center.
