Kayci's Suffolk Story

Kayci Resende Abbott

Tell us about yourself:
I’m a Nathan Miller Scholar and McNair Scholar pursuing a BS in philosophy with a minor in both women’s & gender studies and black studies. I’m originally from Dorchester, Boston.

Are you involved in any student organizations?
I am the president of the Black Student Union (BSU). BSU has provided a community and a physical safe space on campus in our club room that I can go to and see people who look like me and share the same experiences.

What practical experiences have you had in your program?
As a McNair Scholar I have gone to New York and Ohio for conferences and school tours. These experiences provided a space for me to expand my thoughts and dream about graduate school. Exposure = accessibility and making grad school more accessible made it easier for me to apply to different programs.

What other jobs and experiences have you had that have enriched your Suffolk education?
I have been a teaching assistant for the First Year Experience since my sophomore year and a TA coordinator since fall ‘24. These experiences have introduced me to a network of professors and staff, and I’ve made great relationships with first-year students. I have been in a fellowship with the Mayor’s Office of LGBTQIA2S+ Advancement (MOLA) at City Hall since June of 2024. The work that I do with MOLA is very important to me as a Queer individual; I get to actively work and advocate for the LGBTQIA2S+ community here in Boston.

What course, project, or other experience has been the most compelling, interesting, or significant for you so far? Why?
One of my earliest experiences at Suffolk was being a part of the Women & Incarceration Project. This experience helped me make an impact as a sophomore, and learn more about the impact of prison and jails on women here in Mass.

Are there any faculty or staff who have significantly affected your experience, or who you would consider a mentor?
I believe I wouldn’t be where I am without the guidance of faculty and staff here at Suffolk. To name a few, Marissa Pierre in SLI, Dr. Katherine Horn (McNair mentor & WGS professor), Dr. Bryan Trabold (English), Cherina Wright (AVP), Bryan Landgren, Dr. Abraham Pena, and many more.
