Tell us a little about yourself.
I am an environmental studies major with a journalism minor. I’m originally from Fair Lawn, New Jersey, but I call Allston my home now.
Why did you choose Suffolk?
I chose Suffolk University because of its location in Boston which provides the ideal combination of academic, urban life, and beautiful views. With a campus in the city's heart, I have access to diverse cultural experiences, networking opportunities, and exciting city life while engaging in a strong, close-knit academic community.
What is the community at Suffolk like?
The close-knit student community within the environmental studies program promotes collaboration and support, allowing me to interact extensively with my academic classmates and real-world environmental concerns, preparing me for a successful career.
What first got you interested in environmental studies?
My early experiences hiking and fishing with my father influenced my decision to pursue a degree in environmental studies. From a young age, I had a strong connection to nature, which piqued my interest in understanding and protecting the environment. These outdoor excursions sparked a passion for environmental conservation, which now influences my academic and professional goals.
What course has been the most significant for you so far?
Environmental Research Methods has been the most compelling and significant class I've taken at Suffolk. The opportunity to design a research project on classifying mushrooms in a local forest has made it particularly fascinating. It allowed me to engage deeply with hands-on fieldwork and apply scientific methods to real-world environmental challenges, enhancing my skills and passion for environmental studies.
Are there any faculty or staff members who have significantly affected your experience?
One professor who has significantly influenced my experience at Suffolk University is Professor Hayley Schiebel. Her deep knowledge and passion for the environment have made her classes both challenging and inspiring to my journey. Beyond academics, she has been a mentor offering guidance on research projects and has always encouraged me to think critically and push further. Her support has been instrumental in shaping my academic and professional journey.
What are your future career ambitions?
I aim for a career in environmental journalism. This perfectly aligns with my studies. Environmental classes give me the analytical skills to learn complicated ecological concerns and hands-on skills within fieldwork, whereas journalism classes help me improve my writing and reporting abilities.
