Entering a new culture or environment is no easy task and might be a little intimidating at first. You worry about finding your people and how much harder you’ll have to work to prove yourself because everything is different for you when you are an international student. Who would have thought that I would be here from Kingston, Jamaica, calling Suffolk University my home and doing what many call incredible?
I always knew I was capable but I had my doubts. Suffolk has helped me erase those thoughts. In only a few months, I excelled in my academics, got involved, and took on multiple leadership positions—all while commuting for a total of five hours everyday.
Suffolk provided me with multiple opportunities and all I had to do was say yes! I said yes to becoming a Jumpstart volunteer. I said yes to becoming a teaching assistant. I said yes to becoming a Ram Academy leader, and I said yes to multiple volunteer service trips.
One of the greatest adventures I said yes to was becoming an orientation leader. This journey allowed me to see Suffolk University in a whole different light. Along this journey I learned that the sense of community and support at Suffolk University fosters the growth and development of every individual and is always tailored to your needs. With such a diverse student body and faculty, I can assure you that there is something or someone here that welcomes you for who you are.
Suffolk University has taught me that nothing is impossible; all it takes is a little practice. I am super excited because this is only the beginning. So the next time Suffolk says yes, get excited, because there are many opportunities coming your way. I’ve traveled, I’ve explored, and I’m growing. Thank you, Suffolk.
