New Freshmen Course Registration

Welcome to the Suffolk community! It's time to prepare for orientation by completing the next steps for course registration. We recommend that you bookmark this page for easy access.

Spring Registration Instructions

Follow these next steps to complete the course registration process. We advise you to register for your spring classes prior to your orientation.

New students should schedule a zoom meeting to finalize their schedules with an academic advisor from the Undergraduate Academic Advising Center. Please schedule an appointment through Navigate or you can also call us at 617-573-8034 to set up an appointment.

We recommend completing Steps 1-4 listed below at least 3 days prior to your advising meeting if possible.

Please call the Undergraduate Academic Advising Center at 617-573-8034 if you have any questions about registration.

Workday is the University portal for students, faculty, and staff where you can access course registration in the Academics hub, financial information in the Financials hub, and other online tools.

You must have access to your Canvas account in order to complete the Math and Writing Placement Exams. Suffolk credentials have been emailed to you separately by Information Technology Services (ITS). If you need assistance with your login information or help resetting your password, please contact the ITS HelpDesk at 617-557-2000.

Math Placement Exam (MPE)

All Suffolk students are required to complete the math requirement. You must complete the Math Placement Exam (MPE) to determine the appropriate math course to take. Once you have completed the exam, it can take up to three business days for results to be posted on Workday. We strongly recommend that you take the exam as soon as possible to make the registration process smoother.

To access the exam
  • Log in to Canvas
  • In the 'My Courses' box, you should see a link to the Math Placement Exam
  • Read through the on-screen instructions
  • Begin the exam. The math placement exam takes about 45-60 minutes to complete

Frequently asked questions about the MPE, including how to access your placement score can be found on the Math department page. If you have additional questions about the MPE, you can contact Ben Deissler. Please allow one to two business days for a response.

Writing Placement

All students are required to complete First Year Writing as part of their degree requirements. You must complete the Writing Placement to determine the appropriate writing course(s) to take. The Writing Placement Survey takes about 15-20 minutes to complete. Once you have completed the writing placement questionnaire, you will receive your writing placement towards the end of the survey (please take a screenshot or write down your results).

To access the exam
  • Log in to Canvas
  • In the "My Courses" box, you should see a link to the Math and Writing Placement Exam
  • Read through the onscreen instructions before beginning the exams

Please note: It can take up to three business days after you complete the writing placement to be eligible to register for a writing course.

Frequently asked questions about the Writing Placement survey can be found on the English department page. If you have additional questions about the survey, you can contact the Director of First-Year Writing Erin Trauth. Please allow one to two business days for a response.

Before you begin to search for courses, check your math and writing placement scores. You'll need to log in to Workday to check your placement results and search for classes.

To check your placement results you should:

  • Log in to Workday
  • Click on your profile picture in the top right corner of Workday
  • Select the View Profile button
  • On the left side in the blue column, click on the academics tab
  • At the top of the page, click on the external records page to see your results

Make sure you write down your placement scores for easy reference when you register for courses.

Begin creating a saved schedule (wish list) of your spring classes using the Creating a Saved Schedule [PDF] instructions.

Remember, your saved schedule is just a tentative list of the courses you plan to take. You will have the opportunity to review and edit your schedule during a zoom meeting with an academic advisor. Advisors will make sure you are in an appropriate schedule for first semester based on your placement scores and major when you meet with them.

Once you’ve completed your math and writing placements, you should schedule an appointment with the Undergraduate Academic Advising Center prior to your orientation session. Please log on to Navigate to schedule your advising appointment or call our office at 617-573-8034 to schedule your appointment over the phone.

Some helpful tips for you to prepare for your meeting with an academic advisor:

  • Your meeting will take place on zoom. The confirmation e-mail along with the zoom link will be sent to your Suffolk e-mail address once you book your appointment. Please make sure you can access your Suffolk e-mail prior to your meeting
  • It will be easier to navigate Workday on a laptop as opposed to a phone. Please make sure you have access to a computer and to your Suffolk credentials at the time of your appointment
  • Be prepared to share your screen on zoom
  • Let the advisor know if you are expecting any incoming transfer credit such as credit from AP Exams, dual enrollment courses through a local college, A-Level Exams, or IB credit

Please call the Undergraduate Academic Advising Center at 617-573-8034 if you have any questions about registration.
