Academic English

Our Academic English Program provides excellent preparation for students planning to enter our undergraduate and graduate programs.

The INTO Suffolk Academic English Program (AE) offers part-time and full-time instruction for students who would like to improve their academic, professional, or general English language skills. Our INTO Suffolk advisors and academic English instructors will help you build confidence and comfort in reading, writing, listening and speaking English.

Through the Academic English program, you will

  • learn to present spoken and written ideas accurately and effectively in English
  • learn to strategically read, clearly understand, and critically evaluate academic texts
  • learn to take useful and accurate notes in academic lectures and presentations
  • feel confident with listening comprehension
  • build skills and confidence in communicating with others
  • expand your vocabulary and grammar skills
  • understand U.S. academic values and standards
  • understand the importance of time management and study skills
  • gain insight into life and culture in the U.S.

Key Program Facts

  • High school diploma required
  • No English language requirement; students will be assessed and placed upon arrival
  • Six levels of instruction from beginner to advanced
  • Eighteen hours of instruction per week
  • Program length is 14-15 weeks
  • Minimum enrollment of one semester
  • Minimum age 16

If you plan to study full-time, we will provide support throughout the application process for your F-1 student visa.

All Academic English courses are non-credit. At the end of each semester, students receive a letter grade on their transcript.
