Suffolk's Theatre Department is student-centered. We'll help you shine, whether you choose to act; write, direct, and design your own original plays; master stage or arts management; intern with leading theatre companies in Boston and abroad; and so much more. Our students work in classic, musical, and experimental genres with a special focus on new work.

Our broad-based liberal arts degree provides a solid foundation in the theatre and an education for life. The personally tailored, flexible theatre curriculum is filled with rich interdisciplinary possibilities that can adapt to who you are and what you want to become. At Suffolk, you can change your mind as you grow.

Direct mentorship from our faculty will help you confidently move in the world as a practitioner in the performing arts or in many other professions. Suffolk's Theatre Department will train you to innovate, create, build, and lead.

Suffolk student productions take center stage at our jewel-box Modern Theatre in Boston's lively Theatre District and at the more-intimate Sullivan Studio Theatre in the Sawyer Building. Add in Boston's collection of beloved theatres and jam-packed arts calendar, and you have the ideal training ground for theatre majors.

Please note: There is no audition to enroll in the theatre major or to participate in our classes.

"I came to the Theatre Department to study acting. Encouraged to explore every facet of theatre, I acted, directed, wrote, designed, and stage-managed. I was able to find my place in the professional theatre by exploring each discipline. This wide range of knowledge paired with mentorship I received (and still receive) from professors gave me the ability to confidently start my career as a professional stage manager."

Kevin Hanley - Kevin Hanley ’16, Assistant Stage Manager of the international tour of the production of HOME

Theatre Department Accountability Statement

The Suffolk University Theatre Department affirms racial equity as a core value and celebrates diversity in all of its forms. We commit to a co-collaborative "Plan for Change" that will evolve through our ongoing work to make the Theatre Department a more equitable environment for everyone in our community.

Like our colleagues in academia and professional theatre throughout the US and around the world, we must reckon with systemic racism and cultural inequities in our midst.

We are grateful for the activism of our alumni and students who have alerted us to the urgent need to implement anti-racist practices in our production processes, our curriculum and for greater BIPOC representation in every facet of our program.

We are learning about how our words and actions can support a more trusting and more welcoming culture in the department. We affirm our accountability for this.

We stand in solidarity with our BIPOC colleagues and all underrepresented and marginalized communities.

We pledge ourselves to continue to listen and learn from our students and alumni and the sustained, long-term commitment that the work towards greater Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion requires.
