A nonprofit organization founded by Suffolk University alumnus and former Army Staff Sergeant David Campisano, BSBA ’19, MPA ’24, earned a 2025 Leadership in Suicide Prevention Award from the Massachusetts Coalition for Suicide Prevention at a State House ceremony on March 12.

According to some estimates, more than 22 veterans die by suicide every day. In 2020, Campisano launched 22Mohawks, whose mission is to raise awareness and reduce suicide rates among veterans, and to “fight for those who fought for our country.”

In his remarks, Campisano praised the 22Mohawks staff, who have helped 171 veterans over the years through their outreach, mental fitness classes, and community events, along with two core programs: Pups for Vets and First Responders, and the Airborne Operations Course and Retreat.

“To my team members, you are the heart of this mission,” said Campisano. “Your dedication, grit, and unwavering commitment to serving those who have served us is what makes this fight winnable.

“This award is a reminder, not of what we have done, but of what we must continue to do. It is a call to press forward, to remain relentless in our pursuit of life-saving intervention, and to honor the living as fiercely as we remember the fallen.”
