Suffolk University integrate sustainability standards into many of our business practices to go beyond efficiency and improve the health and well-being of our community. Efforts through the community have touched upon a variety of impact areas.
Recent Initiatives
- Establishing a STEP Internship position within the Facilities Department dedicated to Sustainability
Learn more about the program and apply for next semester’s position - Earth Day Fair collaboration with the Student Environmental Club
- Student Environmental Club Lunchtime Lecture Series
- Updating of trash and recycling signage across campus
- New bike room in Smith Hall basement
- Composting pilot program in the 150 Tremont Cafeteria for students living in Smith Hall, 10 West, and Modern Residence Halls

Get Involved On Campus
You can get involved and help the environment in many ways around campus including:
- Join a club at Suffolk like the Student Environmental Club or Student Government Association to plan programming and effect policies on campus related to sustainability
- Participate in Service Learning through Suffolk’s Center for Community Engagement to make a real difference with local organizations completing environmental clean-ups, habitat for humanity trips, community farming, and many more fulfilling opportunities
- Joining the Sustainability Committee is a great option for staff and faculty to plan programming and effect policies on campus related to sustainability
- Incorporate sustainable principles, from environmental conservation to equity and inclusion, into course work as a student or faculty member. Sustainability fits into many curriculum at Suffolk, including key areas aligned with majors throughout the three colleges:
- Art & Design – design net zero spaces through materials choice and innovation
- Business – incorporate corporate social responsibility into a business plan or integrate sustainability into entrepreneurial endeavors by ensuring to limit the environmental impact of your product or service
- Communications and Advertising – expose impacts of climate change, promote products by highlighting their low environmental impact
- Government & Law – work to establish legislation and community programs to improve human/environmental conditions
- Sciences – focus on environmental conservation, engineer green energy
- Theater – create productions to bring attention to environmental issues and work to limit waste generated during production
- World Languages, History – understand and study the past, present, future of environmental issues and impact throughout the world
