How Suffolk is saving water

Suffolk University has taken several steps to reduce water consumption.  Retrofits conducted in 2008 brought the following to facilities throughout campus:

  • Dual-flush toilets (quantity: 125)
  • Low-flow aerators on faucets (quantity: 455)
  • Low-flow showerheads (quantity: 198).

This fiscal year, we reduced water consumption by 8% overall in University buildings, compared to the same period last year (July-September).  This amounts to a savings of approximately 650,000 gallons of water, enough to provide 4 average U.S. households with water for one year.

Next Steps

Installing a low-flow spray valve in the Donahue Cafe Kitchen (Fall 2009).

We continue to explore options for reducing water consumption.  Your suggestions are welcome.

How you can help save water

You can save water by:

  • Reporting any leaks to Facilities by filling out a work order or calling x8110.
  • Utilizing the dual-flush function by selecting the proper flush for liquid waste

Specifically for students living in residence halls:

  • Turning off the faucet while you brush your teeth and wash your face
  • Reducing the length of your showers
  • Only washing full loads of clothing and full loads of dishes.
