Suffolk Sustainability Committee
In January 2007, Facilities Planning & Management convened a Sustainability Committee, an advisory group regarding research, education, and outreach in the area of sustainability. The following fall, the Recycling Committee and Sustainability Committee merged to address campus environmental matters comprehensively. The Sustainability Committee works to:
- Develop sustainability principles
- Explore opportunities to enhance best management practices for facilities operations; design/construction; and procurement
- Provide leadership in determining feasibility of ideas
- Encourage inclusion of sustainability topics in learning opportunities
- Lend guidance on how to raise awareness among University community members
The group includes representation from a cross-section of the Suffolk community.

If you are a Suffolk student, faculty, or staff member interested in joining the Committee, we would like to hear from you. We are particularly seeking students to join the Committee for the 2009-10 school year. The Committee meets approximately 5 times per calendar year and contributes to projects that advance campus sustainability.
Green Teams
In the spring of 2007, the Public Administration Department within the Sawyer Business School became the first Suffolk department to form a Green Team. It was soon followed by the Law School. In the fall of 2009, the Ballotti Learning Center formed a Green Team. With support from the Special Projects Coordinator for Campus Sustainability, Green Teams focus on developing operations that minimize waste and foster conservation.
Some of the areas the teams have focused on include:
- Waste minimization
- Reuse
- Recycling
- Energy and water conservation
- Purchasing practices (i.e. paper with recycled content)
- Raising awareness about environmentally responsible behavior
