Back before the region’s major sports franchises—the Boston Bruins, Celtics, and Red Sox, and the New England Patriots—turned our city into Titletown USA, cold-calling one of those teams and getting a job as a college student or new graduate was a distinct possibility. Now, it’s not so easy.

Turns out, everyone wants to work for a winner.

“Students know that knocking on the door of the Celtics and saying ‘I want to apply for a job’—it doesn’t quite work that way,” says Catherine McCabe, marketing department chair.

We interviewed two Sawyer Business School alumni who overcame the odds and landed pivotal roles with Boston’s championship organizations. They know the success of a professional sports franchise depends on much more than the world’s greatest athletes.
