  • Andrea Paciello, FACHE

    Distinguished Guest Lecturer of Healthcare Administration

    Andrea Paciello, executive director of Radiation Oncology at the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH), joins Suffolk University with more than 12 years of experience as a hospital executive.

    During her two-year appointment as the distinguished guest lecturer, Paciello will deliver presentations to our healthcare students, alumni and faculty, and she will have professional networking dinners with graduating healthcare administration students.

    In her current role at MGH, Paciello manages 400 full-time employees and oversees an annual operating expense budget of about $80 million.

    Here’s a look at some of her major accomplishments over the last six years:

    • Secured approval for an expansion in proton therapy services
    • Negotiated and collaborated with 10+ community hospitals around potential and existing strategic affiliations and partnerships, including Newton-Wellesley Hospital, Emerson Hospital, and Exeter Hospital.
    • Initiated 16 Clinical Collaboratives to create structure for critical disease-specific multidisciplinary dialog
    • Launched several key foundational initiatives, including the Multicultural Leadership Committee, Customer Service Council, and Community Health Improvement Initiative
    • Played a key role in developing productivity-based physician compensation plans, a nurse practitioner staffing model, and MGH strategic plan.

    Paciello began her time with Massachusetts General Hospital in 2001 as an administrative fellow. She went on to become the administrative director of Burns, Plastic Surgery, General Surgery, Trauma, and Surgical Oncology, and later served as the co-director of the Lunder Building Operations Implementation. In that role, she led the successful relocation of 20+ clinical and support services to MGH’s new 14-story, 500K-square-foot Lunder Building, which included five inpatient/ICU floors, 28 ORs, an emergency department, sterile processing, and radiation oncology.

    She is Board Certified in Healthcare Management by the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE) and recently served as the ACHE regent for Massachusetts. She currently serves on ACHE’s national Career Services Task Force and as Treasurer of ACHE’s Massachusetts chapter.

    Paciello finds the greatest professional satisfaction in coaching and witnessing the success of the students, interns, administrative fellows, and staff that she has mentored. Last year, she started an Administrative Internship Program at MGH that accepted six students, one of whom is a Suffolk student.

    In June 2013, Paciello was honored with the 2013 Massachusetts Early Careerist Healthcare Award, presented at the Massachusetts Hospital Association’s Annual Meeting. In addition, she was a 2013 Honoree for “The One Hundred” at the Massachusetts General Hospital Cancer Center.

    Outside of her professional career, Paciello serves as a volunteer wish granter with the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Massachusetts and Rhode Island and has served on the Board of the Junior League of Boston and chaired community projects that improve the health, wellness, and self-esteem of women and adolescent girls.

  • Anne Marie Conway

    Lecturer of Healthcare Administration

    Professor Conway co-teaches Innovation: The Future of Healthcare with Professor Gregg. She is a registered nurse and an alumnus of Suffolk’s Master of Healthcare Administration Program. She is the senior director of clinical development at Ziopharm Oncology, Inc. Previously, she served as a consultant to pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies, providing global clinical program management, vendor outsourcing, clinical budget development, clinical timeline development, and executive management.

    Prior to consulting, Professor Conway worked at Shire Human Genetic Therapies, a biopharmaceutical company that develops new treatments for rare genetic conditions. From 2001 until 2010, she held several leadership roles at the company, most recently, vice president of Development Operations. At Shire, she was involved with clinical program management, business operations, medical writing, and data management. She led integrated cross-functional teams, resulting in three biologic license application /new drug application filings and subsequent approvals, as well as supplemental new drug applications that led to label changes. Before joining Shire, she spent nearly 20 years at Tufts Medical Center, where she served as a staff nurse, outpatient nurse coordinator, and clinical trials manager. During her time there, she oversaw 15 Phase II-IV studies within the Division of Gastroenterology.

    In addition to her work in the healthcare field, Professor Conway is a member of the advisory board for the Medical Legal Partnership | Boston. MLP | Boston addresses the complex social determinants of patients’ health and ensures that low-income patients are able to meet their basic needs for food, housing and utilities, education and employment, healthcare, and personal and family stability and safety. She has given presentations around the world on various topics, including clinical trials management, women making a difference in healthcare innovation, Gaucher disease, hepatitis C, and the legal and ethical aspects of informed consent. Her clinical background and administrative experience provides valuable insight on the current and future challenges in the healthcare industry.

  • Shelagh Joyce

    Lecturer of Healthcare Administration

    Professor Joyce teaches Health Information Systems. She is a Suffolk University BSBA and M.B.A. alumna and has more than 30 years of experience as a healthcare administrator and executive.

    Professor Joyce is the chief information officer for the Medical Department at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where she manages the information systems and medical record initiatives. For years, she has managed the implementation of clinical and administrative systems, which have resulted in decreased costs and improved efficiencies. She also oversees the department’s strategic system planning efforts.

    Before joining MIT, Professor Joyce was employed at Beacon Partners Inc., a healthcare consulting company. As an engagement manager, she helped several healthcare organizations, including Yale University School of Medicine, Tulane University, St. Louis University, and Akron Children’s Hospital in Ohio, evaluate, execute, and maintain new technology. She also served as the director of community practices application at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, where she oversaw the implementation of electronic records in physician offices and health centers. Earlier, as the director of Information and Telecommunication Systems/ Surgical Division at New England Deaconess Hospital, she managed all information and telecommunication systems for 30 physician offices.

    From 1981 until 1993, Professor Joyce was the director of information systems at South Shore Hospital in Weymouth, Massachusetts. She managed the technical, operations, and analytic staff. She has also been a guest lecturer for the undergraduate and graduate management programs at Simmons College and the University of Massachusetts, Boston. Currently, she is vice chair of the Board of Directors of Brant Point Courtyard on Nantucket, a member of the Board of Directors of the Massachusetts Health Data Consortium,
    a member of the Board of Trustees at Lasell College, and a member of the Finance and Advisory Committee for the Town of Plymouth.

  • Althea C. Lyons

    Lecturer of Healthcare Administration

    Professor Lyons teaches Healthcare Human Resources Management. She is vice president of human resources and development at Northeast Hospital Corporation, which is part of Lahey Health System. She directs human resources support for 2,700 employees and guides workforce development.

    The ability to successfully integrate human resources management directly into the pursuit of corporate strategic goals is the hallmark of Professor Lyons’ career. She offers deep insight into today’s complex, dynamic, and competitive industry that places exceptional demands on HR professionals. Administratively, it’s subject to federal and state regulations. Legal liability is a risk. It’s technology intensive, demanding highly specialized skills. Some workers are unionized. Workforce development is a high-stakes enterprise for the entire industry.

    Professor Lyons gained her expertise over the course of 25 years, rising from an entry-level HR position to the top of her field. Her expertise now spans all HR functions and includes recruitment and staffing; employee relations and conflict resolution; leadership development; employee compensation, health services, and workers compensation; negotiating, interpreting, and ensuring compliance with union contracts; designing, developing, and delivering training programs; project management; policy development, implementation, and compliance; designing, developing, and implementing reduction-in-force programs; managing volunteer services; and developing and overseeing budgets.

    At Northeast Hospital Corporation, which manages healthcare facilities north of Boston, Professor Lyons oversees design, development, and implementation of all employee-related programs, including compensation, benefits, employee/labor relations, training, and organizational development. She is the primary contact with the Massachusetts Nurses Association. As a member of several hospital committees, she addresses workplace violence, communications, recruitment and retention, and information management. She also oversees the management of the employee health program, volunteer services, the Child Development Center, and pastoral care. Another responsibility is designing, developing, and implementing programs to address clinical staffing shortages.

    Before joining Northeast, Professor Lyons was human resources manager for Harvard Vanguard Medical Associates in Newton, Mass., supporting multiple locations and central clinical departments and ensuring consistency in the provision of human resources support. She trained staff to resolve issues related to employee relations, compensation, benefits, and recruitment. Working in union and non-union settings, she partnered with senior managers to develop HR training programs consistent with strategic business initiatives. Anticipating the potential for legal liability and ensuring compliance with federal and state laws was another responsibility.
    Professor Lyons serves on the advisory board of the North Shore Workforce Investment Board. She earned her BA degree in Psychology and Spanish from Hartwick College and her MBA degree from Suffolk University.

  • Amy S. MacNulty

    Lecturer of Healthcare Administration

    Professor MacNulty teaches Health Systems I. She is President of MacNulty Consulting, LLC, a healthcare management consulting firm that provides strategy and planning services to healthcare organizations.

    Professor MacNulty is project director for Community Care Linkages, a Mass Home Care-sponsored initiative to link the Massachusetts Aging Services Access Points (ASAPs) network into the evolving healthcare delivery system in response to health reform. Under her direction, Community Care Linkages bridges the gap between the existing healthcare systems and long-term services and supports “whole-person” care for the elderly and disabled individuals.

    Recently, she has been engaged by the National Council on Aging (NCOA) as a Learning Network Facilitator to identify collaborative opportunities for sustaining self management supports with community-based organizations and health care organizations, such as Pioneer Accountable Care Organizations, Patient-Centered Medical Homes, new Dual Eligible Plans, and Federally Qualified Health Centers.

    Prior to starting MacNulty Consulting, LLC, Professor MacNulty served as senior principal and northeast region manager for Noblis, a nationally recognized science, technology, and strategy organization. She effectively combined her strategic planning, organizational development, and program design skills to manage a broad range of planning projects. Before working at Noblis, she was managing principal and owner of The Bristol Group, Inc., with responsibility for implementing firm-wide marketing activities, expanding the client base, and developing new service offerings.

    In 2006, Professor MacNulty co-authored Strategies for Physician-Hospital Alignment: A National Study, sponsored by the American Hospital Association’s Society for Healthcare Strategy and Market Development (SHSMD). She has presented on this topic to a variety of national and regional associations, including the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE), American College of Physician Executives (ACPE), Healthcare Financial Management Association (HFMA), Baptist Leadership Institute, Missouri Healthcare Executive Group (MHEG), and New England Society for Healthcare Strategy (NESHS). She was co-editor of Noblis’ Horizons: Journal of the Center for Health Innovation that was published for three years. She was awarded “Healthcare Strategist of the Year” in 2007 by NESHS.

  • Dwight McNeill

    Lecturer of Healthcare Administration

    Professor McNeill teaches Population Health and Health Policy. He is an author, teacher, and consultant.

    He is Lead Faculty for the International Institute for Analytics. He is President of WayPoint Health Analytics, which provides consultation to organizations on health and healthcare analytics. During his 30-year career, he has worked in corporate settings, most recently as global leader for business analytics and optimization for the healthcare industry for IBM and previously as director of healthcare information at GTE Corporation (Verizon). Earlier, he worked for the federal Department of Health and Human Services and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, for information companies, and in provider settings.

    Professor McNeill published two books on healthcare analytics in 2013: A Framework for Applying Analytics in Healthcare: What Can Be Learned from the Best Practices in Retail, Banking, Politics, and Sports, as well as Analytics in Healthcare and the Life Sciences: Strategies, Implementation Methods, and Best Practices. His forthcoming book, Person-Centered Analytics for Health, will be published in late 2014 by FT Press.

    He has numerous publications in Health Affairs and other journals. His most recent ones include “The Value of Building Sustainable Health Care Systems: Capturing the Benefits of Health Plan Transformation” (IBM Center for Applied Insights Publications), “Building Organizational Capacity: A Cornerstone of Health System Reform” (Health Affairs), and “Patient Centered Care as Public Policy: The Role of Government, Payers, and the General Public,” a chapter in the book Putting Patients First (Planetree Press).

    Professor McNeill earned his PhD from Brandeis University in Health and Social Policy and his MPH degree from Yale University in Public Health and Epidemiology. He is a frequent speaker at executive briefings on the discovery and adaptation of the best analytics innovations for health and healthcare, with a focus on population health, patient engagement and provider performance.

  • Gerald F. O'Neill

    Lecturer of Healthcare Administration

    Professor O’Neill teaches Healthcare Accounting and Healthcare Financial Management. He came to Suffolk with more than 30 years of experience as a senior manager for diverse healthcare organizations. His areas of expertise include strategic planning, budgeting, financial management, banking and legal relations, and contract negotiations.

    Professor O’Neill served as the director of finance for Winchester Hospital in Massachusetts, where he oversaw the general accounting, decision support, patient access, and patient financial services departments. He played a critical role in increasing the hospital’s revenue, assisting the finance team secure an $80 million tax-exempt bond issuance to fund new construction and eliminate outstanding debt.

    Prior to joining Winchester Hospital in 2004, Professor O’Neill served as the senior vice president, chief financial officer, and corporate compliance officer for Holy Family Hospital Inc. for six years. In addition to managing the financial operations of the hospital, he also oversaw the information systems, patient registration, medical records, and material management departments. He helped increase the net patient service revenue by $1.5 million and implemented a plan that reduced physician practice subsidies by $1.5 million.

    Professor O’Neill began his career as a financial analyst at Malden Hospital, while he was earning his MBA from Northeastern University. He was later promoted to controller, where he was responsible for financial planning, budgeting, internal auditing, patient accounting, and general accounting. In 1986, he became the Treasurer for North Suburban Health Systems, Inc., which consisted of the Malden Hospital, Glenridge Health Care Center, Malden Visiting Nurse Association, Healthcorp, and Sunrise Preschool Learning Center. During his tenure, he led a $3 million operations improvement program with a major consulting firm. From 1997 to1998, he served as the senior financial planning specialist for the Hallmark Health Corporation, where he played an integral role in the merger of Lawrence Memorial, Melrose-Wakefield, and Malden Hospital.

    Professor O’Neill has bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Business Administration from Northeastern University. He is a member of the board of directors for the Massachusetts- Rhode Island Healthcare Financial Management Association (HFMA) and the Massachusetts Hospital Association Insurance Agency. He is also a fellow (FHFMA) of the Healthcare Financial Management Association, former president of the Massachusetts Chapter of HFMA, former Regional Executive of Region One HFMA, and a former member of the Committee on Finance of the Massachusetts Hospital Association.

  • Elizabeth A. Turner

    Lecturer of Healthcare Administration

    Professor Turner teaches Legal Environment of Healthcare and Performance Improvement and Patient Safety. She also co-teaches Leadership Ethics in Health Organization with Professor Nelson.

    She is a nurse-attorney whose practice focuses on health care law. She has more than 30 years of healthcare experience in both clinical and administrative roles, including the areas of healthcare policy and regulation, quality assurance, and program design and evaluation. She has worked in the public and private healthcare sectors, including the Medicare and Medicaid programs, managed care organizations, private insurers, and state agencies. She has a particular interest in healthcare regulation, access to health care services, professional practice issues, including related employment matters.

    Professor Turner is respected for her expertise in the areas of healthcare practice, regulation, and licensure issues. She has worked with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA), the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH), and the various state licensing boards on professional practice and controlled substances matters. She represents individual practitioners, healthcare facilities, and programs and organizations. With a strong interest in public health and health policy issues, she has worked with agencies and practitioners providing healthcare services to the homeless, mentally ill, and indigent.

    Professor Turner is a member of the American Association of Nurse Attorneys and has served on the Board of Directors of the New England Chapter. She lectures extensively, both locally and nationally, on professional practice, regulatory compliance, and health policy issues, and she has authored several related articles and references. She is a founding partner of Snyder, Turner, Phillips & Ober, LLC, the first all nurse-attorney law firm in the country, located in the Boston area.
