Program Structure and Curriculum

How long does it take to complete full-time?

The full-time GMBA is 33 to 57 credits and can be completed in 10 to 15 months, depending on your educational background.

How long does it take to complete part-time?

The part-time GMBA is 33 to 57 credits and can be completed in 16 to 28 months, depending on your educational background. Alternatively, you have up to five years to complete the degree.

I have a previous business major. Can I waive any courses?

The eight core courses (24 credits) can be waived with previous undergraduate or graduate coursework, thus decreasing the number of credits needed to complete the degree.  Courses must have been taken in the five years prior to entering the Global MBA and have an earned grade of B or better to qualify for waivers.

What concentrations or specializations are available in the Global MBA?

You will choose to concentrate in International Finance or International Marketing.

When do classes meet?

Each class meets one time per week for 2 hours and 40 minutes. Courses are offered on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. Class times can be from 10:00 AM to 12:40 PM; 1:00 to 3:40 PM; 4:30 to 7:10 PM; or 7:15 to 9:55 PM.

I will be a part-time student. How flexible is the program?

You can attend two classes in one night: one from 4:30 to 7:10 PM and a second class from 7:15 to 9:55 PM.  Or take classes in the 7:15 PM time-slot. OR take some courses online. The choice is yours.

What teaching methods are used?

Depending on the course, faculty may use lecture, discussion, case studies, computer simulations, group projects, exams, and/or presentations by business executives.

Internship and Consulting Project

As a full-time student, how will I find a 3-month full-time internship outside my home country?

While GMBAs are encouraged to find their own internships, assistance is provided developing a professional resume and interview skills; and in identifying and attaining internships. The Global MBA Office works to establish relationships with companies both in Boston and abroad, matching student interests with company needs.  Internships are considered an integral part of the Global MBA curriculum.

As a part-time student, I can’t take 3 months off work for an internship. How does the program work for me?

You can do a global research project within your place of employment or a consulting project based on a two-week residency in a company outside the U.S.  The Global MBA Office assists in identifying companies and projects outside the U.S. Instead of taking evening classes in the summer, you will do pre-travel research, become part of a global corporate culture for two weeks, and then complete the analysis and final outcomes report after you return home.  Some part-time students who work at multi-national companies, arrange to do the two-week residency or the 3-month full-time internship at their global office.

One-Week Global Travel Seminar

Is the Global Travel seminar required for full-time and part-time students?

Yes.

What is the content of a Global Travel Seminar?

You will attend two or three pre-travel class meetings, held at a convenient time for both full- and part-time students.  Here you will study the destination country’s culture, economy, business policies, and learn about the companies you will see. In the destination country, you will visit diverse companies, talk with their corporate executives, and be involved in live case studies. Group meals and cultural site visits are arranged.  You will also have some free time within your very busy week’s schedule. There is one after-travel class meeting for final discussion and project reports.

What costs are associated with a Global Travel Seminar?

3 credits of tuition plus a fee. The fee covers accommodations, most meals, cultural site visits, and travel within the destination country. In some, but not all, the fee covers airfare to and from Boston.  If airfare is not included, a group airfare is usually negotiated. The fee will vary by destination.

Admission

What are the admission criteria?

  • Three years work experience
  • A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited academic institution (or international equivalent)
  • Strong standardized test scores
  • Two letters of recommendation

The Global MBA admissions committee specifically looks for applicants with talents that will add value to the classroom; and experience, achievements, and/or career goals that exhibit a distinct international management orientation and high potential for global leadership

Is an interview required?

Yes. Viable applicants will be contacted by the Global MBA Office for an interview with Dean Hallberg. International candidates and those outside the Boston area, may have a telephone interview.

What are your application deadlines?

Full-time applications are accepted for Fall and Spring admission; part-time for Fall, Spring and Summer I admission. The Graduate Admission Office posts application deadlines.  If the date has passed, please email globalmba@suffolk.edu to see if applications are still being accepted.

When are final decisions made?

Suffolk uses a rolling admission process which means individual admission decisions are made after each application is complete. Once your application to the Global MBA is complete, you will either be called by the Global MBA Office to schedule an interview or you will receive a no-admit notification. For those invited to an interview, an admission decision will be given at the conclusion of the interview.

What is your policy on deferred admission?

Admission may be deferred for one year.

I would like to take classes before I take the GMAT. Is that possible?

Yes. The MAPS program allows you to take a maximum six credits of core courses prior to taking the GMAT. Admission criteria include a minimum 2.8 cumulative GPA and at least 3 years work experience. Financial aid is not available for courses taken in MAPS. MAPS courses will apply to both the Global MBA and MBA, if subsequently accepted to either program. MAPS is not available to those on an F-1 visa.

Financial Aid and Scholarships

How much does the Global MBA cost?

Tuition and fee rates are identical to the MBA. However, the full-time program’s accelerated pace may require one to three credits additional tuition in a semester, depending on the student’s educational background. The Global Travel Seminar is required for GMBAs. There is an additional fee for the Seminar which varies by destination. It includes accommodations, most meals, ground transportation within the destination country, corporate and cultural site visits, and in some cases, round-trip airfare from Boston. If airfare is not included, the University arranges a group airfare rate.

Are scholarships available to full-time, part-time, and international students?

Yes. All admitted students are automatically considered for merit-based scholarships, grants and graduate fellowship awards.  Decision criteria include cumulative grade point average and GMAT score. Because they include a work component with a faculty member, graduate fellowships are awarded only to qualifying full-time domestic and international students.

If I don’t qualify for a merit award, what other financial aid is available?

Suffolk University’s Financial Aid Office  offers funding information from a variety sources. Federal programs offer low interest loans to U.S. citizens and permanent residents. Work study positions and campus employment may also be available.  A limited number of “administrative fellowships” are available in campus offices.
