• Association for Strategic Planning presents "Board Role in Strategy: not too big, not too small but just right"

Presentation and Conversation with Michael Kipp of GovernBest

Tuesday, November 10, 2009

6:00pm to 8:00pm

73 Tremont St. Boston, MA.

Many observers of the recent meltdown rightfully ask "where was the board?"  While some focus on transparency and regulatory reform, the broader question is the role of directors in the strategic decisions that set the stage for this mess. Financial services, housing, transportation, and health care all face obvious strategic challenges, but players in nearly every sector seem to be pursuing strategies and even business models whose days seem numbered. McKinsey finds that fewer than 25% of directors know their company’s strategy; less than half are knowledgeable about the 4 or 5 key initiatives underway at any given time.  Nor is the nonprofit sector exempt.  The board’s finest hour may be its selection of a CEO, but its participation in questions of identity and direction would seem less than a minute behind.

This program offers a grounded, experience-based view of the board’s role in the development of strategy, illustrating that view with a set of concepts, tools and processes based on representative cases and welcoming participants to share their own experience with critical role.
