What is the New Product Innovation Competition?

The new Product Innovation Competition was established by the Sawyer Business School in 2006 to encourage innovation among its students.

The competition was founded by executive in residence Sushil Bhatia, a globally known innovator, entrepreneur, inventor, author, and professor, who holds several patents for his innovations.

Eligibility Requirements

The Competition is open to all undergraduate and graduate students and alumni of Suffolk University.

Contest Rules & Guidelines

  • The product ideas only need to be well formulated ideas.  One does not need to physically create a product; however, some have before and a picture illustration drawing is encouraged.
  • The product can be inspired from an existing product and/or technology as long as it does not replicate or fully copy an existing consumer product.
  • Contestants may apply individually or as a team.
  • Contestants must be a student of Suffolk University: Sawyer Business School, College of Arts and Sciences, Suffolk Law School, or alumnus to enter.
  • Submissions will not be accepted after the submission deadline on November 30, 2009.
  • Submissions will only be accepted electronically via the online submission form.

Judging Criteria

Here is a list of questions the judges base their decision on:

  • How bold / fresh is the concept?
  • How persuasive and coherent is the concept?
  • How does the concept meet the customers need?
  • How compelling are the concepts’ quantative and qualative benefits?
  • Does the product have "green" environmental features?
  • How does the concept provide a unique competitive advantage?
  • What are the risks? Are these risks addressed?

Dates & Deadlines

All entries must be submitted electronically via online submission form no later than: November 30, 2009.

Winners will be announced during the Awards Ceremony of which all contenders should attend. There will be a great socializing event with free food and beverages.

The Award Ceremony will be held on March 5, 2010 in the function room at 120 Tremont St.

Prizes

Each entry will be evaluated by a team of business professionals who will award cash prizes in the amounts of:

  • First Prize - $3,500
  • Second Prize - $1,000
  • Third Prize - $500
  • Urvashi Bhatia Green Product Award - $2,500 plus access to advising services donated by venture capital firms, IP law firms, CPA firms and other industry experts for one year.
  • MGT 101 Award - $1000
