Suffolk has study abroad programs in 25 countries. Some programs are open to all majors, others are open only to Arts & Sciences students or only to Business students. To determine which majors are available at any of our programs, please refer to our majors chart.
back to top^To build a schedule, you will need to review the courses on offer at each program site via the link on the program page. You will meet with your academic advisor to discuss your schedule.
back to top^The deadline for studying abroad in the Fall or Academic Year is April 15. The deadline for Spring semester programs is October 15, and for Summer programs is April 1.
back to top^You will need to fill out the Suffolk Study Abroad Application, and for some programs, also fill out the program’s application form. All applications should be submitted to the Suffolk Study Abroad Office for processing. Once your application is complete, you should receive a decision from the overseas program, in approximately 2-5 weeks depending on the program. While abroad you are registered both at Suffolk and at the school overseas.
back to top^Students can go abroad for one or two semesters, or a summer. Suffolk faculty-led program options may be as short as three weeks or as many as 8 weeks. You can do more than one program for a total of two semesters and a summer maximum.
back to top^Housing options vary by program. Students are housed in either dormitories, shared apartments, or homestays. Not all housing options are available at every program. Refer to the program page for more details on housing options at specific programs.
back to top^Tuition charges for all Suffolk study abroad programs are Suffolk tuition fees (up to 17 credits). Students who wish to take more than the equivalent of 17 credits will have to pay an additional per-credit charge. Housing fees vary by program and estimates are given on each programs’ information page. More detailed fees are distributed at advising appointments.
back to top^You may use financial aid, with the exception of work study, on any Suffolk study abroad program. If you are using financial aid to pay for your housing fees, you must fill out a consortium agreement which is available at the Financial Aid office. You do not need this form if you are using financial aid for tuition fees only. Students going on non-Suffolk programs are unable to take institutional aid abroad.
back to top^Classes at our Study Abroad programs are generally taught in English. Some require that you take a language course as part of your course load while abroad (Italy and Japan programs). While this is not required at all programs, we do recommend that you study the language while you are abroad in order to help you communicate outside the classroom and make the most of your experience!
back to top^Most programs do require a visa, however this varies by program and by your own citizenship.
back to top^In most cases the answer is no. If you are not a citizen of the country you are studying in, and are on a visa, you usually are prohibited from working while you are abroad. Some countries do allow you to work while you are abroad, but the number of hours you can work is strictly limited. Check with the consulate of the country you will be studying in.
back to top^We do not assist students with the application process or selection of non-Suffolk programs, however, for risk management purposes, we do still require that students submit a Suffolk study abroad application form. Credits from non-Suffolk programs are considered transfer credit, and students will pay all fees directly to the non-Suffolk program. You are not registered at Suffolk during your semester abroad in this case. Institutional financial aid is not portable for non-Suffolk programs.
