Seminar for Freshmen

The Seminar for Freshmen offers new students in the College of Arts & Sciences an opportunity to immerse themselves in the college experience by exploring an exciting topic in-depth in their first year.

The seminar is much more than a traditional introductory lecture. Classes are small and challenge students to think critically and creatively.

Students may choose from a wide variety of seminar options, from graphic novels, to sustainable living, to the ethics of war and peace. Courses often entail out-of-classroom experiences—students might visit an historic Boston site, attend a cultural event, or hear from a guest speaker.

In addition to getting acclimated to college coursework, this unique experience also allows students to develop lasting relationships with their classmates and faculty. In fact, each student’s Freshmen Seminar professor also serves as his or her advisor, helping to establish a strong bond that can be critical to first-year success.

Getting Started

  • You may pre-register for any seminar that interests you, not necessarily one in your prospective major. Explore course options.
  • Please Note: Some course offerings might have changed since you received your Seminar for Freshmen brochure. Please review the list carefully to see the new options.
  • Some seminars may be linked to a section of CAS-101, and enrollment in both courses is required. This is called a “co-requisite.” During pre-registration, if you chose a Seminar for Freshmen course linked to a CAS-101 course, you will automatically be pre-registered in the CAS-101 section.
  • Prior to pre-registering, you should make a list of all seminars that interest you in case your top choice is full.
  • Class size is limited and your top choices may fill up. We therefore strongly encourage you to register for your seminar as soon as possible—ideally before you arrive on campus for Orientation. How to register.
