Our students are passionate about science. We offer multiple options – including Boston’s only undergraduate forensics program – so you can focus on what interests you most. 

  • Chemistry Major

    Chemists are architects. They deal with the composition of nonliving things—from textiles to oil and petroleum to the atmosphere—essentially, everything that we touch and see. Their “building blocks” are atoms and molecules.

    This program is ideal if you hope to go on to a research career or to graduate school. We’re focused on hands-on laboratory science, and most labs contain 12 or fewer students, ensuring that you get personal attention and interact closely with professors. Importantly, you’ll follow a course of study endorsed by the American Chemical Society (ACS), which guarantees a respected curriculum.  You’re also encouraged to join the student branch of ACS. Suffolk’s chapter is recognized nationwide for its sponsored lectures and community service projects. Many students volunteer at the nearby Museum of Science and the Boston Children’s Museum. Each year, chemistry students attend the national ACS meeting to hear the latest research and developments in the field.

    A chemistry major is a great “building block” for a career, too: Many students go on to high-demand fields including pharmaceuticals, environmental health, and manufacturing.

  • Biochemistry Major

    Biochemistry is a bridge between biology and chemistry. This “hybrid” major focuses on the composition of living things. You’ll examine topics like how humans derive nutrients from food, how diseases evolve, and why plants thrive in certain environments.

    The program is laboratory focused, and most labs contain 12 or fewer students, ensuring personal attention. Like Chemistry, Suffolk’s Biochemistry program follows a coursework sequence endorsed by the American Chemical Society, which guarantees that your degree will be respected as you go on to graduate and professional work.

    Importantly, the biochemistry major positions you particularly well for careers in rapidly developing fields. Many students go on to lucrative, high-demand careers as allied health workers—the essential medical personnel like nurse practitioners, physician’s assistants, and paramedics. Other students go on to graduate school in toxicology and pharmacology. The biochemistry major also lays the ideal foundation for application to medical school.

  • Biochemistry Major/ Forensic Science Concentration

    You can also choose a concentration in Forensic Science, a program affiliated with the Boston Police Crime Laboratory. Suffolk, a pioneer in this field, is home to the only undergraduate forensic science program in the city. You’ll receive a strong background in biology and chemistry, and then supplement your studies with courses in forensics, toxicology, ethics, and criminal behavior. Hands-on experience with our crime lab partner provides crucial training. Forensic science is a fast-growing field with an array of job prospects; students go on to graduate school in forensics and then frequently secure work in crime laboratories analyzing evidence—from fiber analysis to blood typing to fingerprinting—while acting as law enforcement’s crucial scientific arm.

Boston is known for its extraordinary hospitals and laboratories. Scientific pioneers come from all over the world to work at and receive treatment in our medical facilities; our laboratories are responsible for transformative innovations in cancer research, HIV/AIDS, and more. You’re urged to take full advantage of this access; many students go on to labs and medical schools right here in Boston, with relationships facilitated by Suffolk faculty. Under the advisement of a faculty member, you’ll also be encouraged to apply for National Science Foundation Fellowships, which allow you to participate in funded summer research projects here and across the country.
